La Closerie des Lilas: Reviews & Ratings

This brasserie has staged Parisian life since 1847: Monet, Renoir, and Zola gathered here; Hemingway edited The Sun Also Rises at these tables. The dining room still performs its Art Deco role — red booths, mirrored panels, etched glass under soft lamps. The food respects that lineage of craft: fried shrimp, cut along the ventral side to stay straight, show raw preparation rather than frozen routine. A pork filet mignon in sauce charcutière, with bronzed gratin dauphinois, speaks of cuisine bourgeoise — rooted, unpretentious, subtly exact. A table where memory and flavour converse in elegance.

This was an amazing experience in my last day in Paris! Loved the restaurant and the ambiance. The service was super attentive and the food was all top notch as befitting a restaurant of this caliber. I heard alot about this place and it fulfilled all the promise.

Absolutely enchanting atmosphere and one of the most impressive bar menus I have ever seen. As a bonus they give you some delicious house made chips with your drink. The bartender was very friendly and made some interesting conversation. I even got to sit right next to Hemingway’s seat (which they have marked) and enjoyed imagining what the place must have been like all those years ago.

La Closerie des Lilas stands as a timeless beacon on Boulevard du Montparnasse, where Parisian history breathes through its walls since 1847. This brasserie is more than dining; it is a living archive of culture, a place where Monet, Renoir, Zola, and Hemingway shaped their art and words. The atmosphere pulses with rich Art Deco details — red booths, mirrored panels, and etched glass under soft ambient light — creating an intimate, elegant backdrop that invites reflection and savoring.

The cuisine here honors tradition with deliberate precision and unpretentious craft. Dishes like the fried shrimp, skillfully cut along the ventral side to maintain form, speak volumes of care and freshness over frozen convenience. The pork filet mignon in sauce charcutière, paired with bronzed gratin dauphinois, delivers a rooted, bourgeois quality that comforts without pretense. Each bite reflects a conversation between memory and flavor, where classic French culinary values meet exacting technique.

What lingers beyond the plate is the feeling of being part of a narrative — dining where Hemingway once edited passages, or sitting near the marked spot of his favored seat. The attentive service complements the experience without intruding, while live piano music gently enhances the mood, offering a rare place to slow down and immerse oneself fully in the moment.

For those seeking not just a meal but a connection to Paris’ artistic pulse and gastronomic heritage, La Closerie des Lilas is unforgettable. It balances history, ambiance, and refined cuisine with a natural ease that makes every visit a journey into the soul of the city.
